4 Insulation Facts

Here are 4 Insulation Facts that you need to know! Did you know that about half of the energy we use to heat or cool our homes would leak out without insulation? A poorly insulated home hits homeowners where it hurts the most–their wallets!

Insulation Facts

Insulation Will Pay for Itself

  • A common excuse people make to avoid adding insulation to their homes is that it is too expensive. In fact, if you want to save money, you should add insulation. When you add insulation to the walls and attic in your house, the expense will pay for itself many times over in reduced heating and cooling costs in subsequent years.

Insulation Helps In The Summer

  • You may be thinking insulation isn’t something to worry about in the warmer months, but insulation does more than keep your home warm in the winter. Insulation also keeps in the cool air, as well as keeps out the sweltering heat.

Insulation Can Help the Environment

  • If the insulation in your home is poor, it is putting extra strain on all the systems and appliances in your home, making them work harder to do their job. This means your home is using more energy than it needs, increasing your carbon footprint. An energy audit can pinpoint the source of your energy issues so that you can reduce the amount of energy your home uses, which not only helps you, but the environment as well.

Call A Professional

  • How effective insulating your home will be depends on the quality of the installation job. If the material used is high quality, but spots are missed during the job, the material will not be able to properly insulate the home as it should. Our friendly professionals here at Henges Insulation and Fireplaces provide high quality work on every job. A Small Investment in Attic Insulation Can Make a Big Difference

Considering that about half of a household’s entire energy bill goes to heating and cooling, and attic insulation is relatively inexpensive, there’s little money to be lost and lots to be gained from insulating your attic. You’ll reduce heating and cooling bills, give your furnace and air conditioner a break, and improve the comfort in your home.

Attic Insulation Can Make a Big Difference

If your home is older, it may not have any insulation in the attic. Or if you haven’t added to your insulation in years, it may be compressed and therefore less effective. Either way, you could be losing heating and cooling dollars every single day. Insulation works by trapping little pockets of air that then form an air barrier between the inside and outside temperatures. Because these pockets of air can’t move, they can’t travel through the insulation to transfer their heat. Over time, insulation settles, is introduced to moisture which weighs it down, and may even get walked on occasionally all of which presses these pockets of air out of the insulation making it less effective.

Start simple and adopt that old Great Depression fixture — the draft snake, which you can easily make yourself. Just place a rolled bath towel under a drafty door (or all you craftier people can make a more attractive DIY draft snake). You can use any scraps of fabric, even neckties, and fill with sand or kitty litter.

What Does Your Front Door Have To Do With Saving You Money?

Lowering your energy bill can start at your front door! Doors and windows are a great starting point to help make your home more energy-efficient.

What Does Your Front Door Have To Do With Saving You Money?

Here are some tips from Desert News to help:

  • Wood is the most beautiful, but it is also the least energy efficient.
  • Insulated doors have a core of foam insulation, which increases thermal resistance.
  • Any glass within the door frame should also be insulated, meaning two panes of glass at a minimum.
  • Proper weatherstripping is critical to keeping air from leaking.
  • Vinyl weatherstripping, which is slightly more expensive, will hold up well to traffic and resists moisture

At Henges Insulation & Fireplaces, we know that your home is an important investment. We also recognize your desire to decrease your overall home-ownership costs. We will work with you to find the best insulation for your home. We will carefully and thoroughly install quality insulation that will increase the value of your investment and lower your home-ownership costs.

What Can You Learn From Snow On Your Roof?

What Can You Learn From Snow On Your Roof?

Did you know that how the snow melts on your roof indicates what insulation your attic needs? If your attic has little or no insulation, the snow will melt quickly. If your attic needs more insulation in spots, you will notice parts of the snow melting. If your attic insulation is good, the snow will last longer.

  • Check after a light snowstorm with little wind.
  • Examine your roof and compare it to the neighbors.
  • If your roofing is asphalt shingles, the snow should stay for days unless the air temperature rises above 32 degrees.
  • If it melts unevenly, make a note of where the bare roofing shows through first. That is likely to be a place where extra heat is escaping from your house into the attic.

  1. Drafty Rooms
    • Possible causes:
      • Cold air leaking into your house around windows, doors, electrical outlets and light fixtures
      • Biggest culprits for leaking air include the attic and recessed lights
    • Solutions:
      • Air sealing
      • Check out your HVAC system – your filter may need changing
  2. Moisture on Windows
    • Possible causes:
      • Inefficient windows (e.g., single pane with aluminum frames)
      • Inadequate ventilation combined with high moisture
    • Solutions:
      • Reduce humidity levels in your home by using ventilation fans in the kitchen and bathrooms
      • Make sure your clothes dryer vents directly outside
      • Install storm windows or ENERGY STAR labeled ones
      • Install a shrink film or a polyethylene sheet window insulation
  3. Cold Floors
    • Possible causes:
      • Insufficient insulation
      • Air infiltration
      • Leaky ducts
    • Solutions:
      • Air sealing
      • Improved insulation
      • Check your HVAC system to make sure it’s functioning properly or if the filter needs changing
  4. Dry Indoor Air
  • Possible causes:
    • Humidity levels are too low
    • HVAC system not functioning properly
    • Air leakage, which lets warm humid air escape and draws in drier, colder air instead
  • Solutions:
    • Set proper humidity levels in your home (between 30%-50%)
    • Seal all air leaks
