Avoid Drafts To Conserve Energy

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, drafts can waste 5 to 30 percent of your energy use!

Start simple and adopt that old Great Depression fixture — the draft snake, which you can easily make yourself. Just place a rolled bath towel under a drafty door (or all you craftier people can make a more attractive DIY draft snake). You can use any scraps of fabric, even neckties, and fill with sand or kitty litter.

What Does Your Front Door Have To Do With Saving You Money?

Lowering your energy bill can start at your front door! Doors and windows are a great starting point to help make your home more energy-efficient.

What Does Your Front Door Have To Do With Saving You Money?

Here are some tips from Desert News to help:

  • Wood is the most beautiful, but it is also the least energy efficient.
  • Insulated doors have a core of foam insulation, which increases thermal resistance.
  • Any glass within the door frame should also be insulated, meaning two panes of glass at a minimum.
  • Proper weatherstripping is critical to keeping air from leaking.
  • Vinyl weatherstripping, which is slightly more expensive, will hold up well to traffic and resists moisture

At Henges Insulation, we know that your home is an important investment. We also recognize your desire to decrease your overall home-ownership costs. We will work with you to find the best insulation for your home. We will carefully and thoroughly install quality insulation that will increase the value of your investment and lower your home-ownership costs.

What Can You Learn From Snow On Your Roof?

What Can You Learn From Snow On Your Roof?

Did you know that how the snow melts on your roof indicates what insulation your attic needs? If your attic has little or no insulation, the snow will melt quickly. If your attic needs more insulation in spots, you will notice parts of the snow melting. If your attic insulation is good, the snow will last longer.

  • Check after a light snowstorm with little wind.
  • Examine your roof and compare it to the neighbors.
  • If your roofing is asphalt shingles, the snow should stay for days unless the air temperature rises above 32 degrees.
  • If it melts unevenly, make a note of where the bare roofing shows through first. That is likely to be a place where extra heat is escaping from your house into the attic.
